Local gods and popular culture: a study of mother goddess worship in an urban setting
I was awarded this grant while pursuing doctoral research, and will submit my dissertation in summer 2001. The grant allowed me to travel to fieldsites, to undertake photography, and to cover other costs of fieldwork and report preparation and to achieve more ambitious documentation of craft and folk traditions than I would otherwise have achieved. It also made me self-confident, and strengthened and boosted my morale. I am planning to publish articles in academic journals and have lectured to American students on these topics.

A monograph on Sendalai temple, Thanjavur
This grant enabled me to do several things. It allowed me to cover many places on my fieldwork and to meet the costs of photography. A basic idea on inscriptions became my main thrust and focus. This led to studying one temple in detail, and I got the opportunity to examine different dimensions of its structure and organisation.

Nageswaraswamy Temple: a Study
The award provided the financial support to undertake a study of the temple, and allowed me to take photographs of the architecture and images in the temple. This research will assist me in my teaching of M.Phil and PhD students.

The project bult on my earlier award from the NTICVA and focused on the Nayak temples in Tamil Nadu. This in turn led to a major research project funded by the University Grants Commission.

Pillar sculptures of the Mahamandapa of Ramaswamy Temple
The findings of the project were communicated in national seminars. Based on these pilot studies I have now (2001) undertaken a major project, funded by the University Grants Commission. Simultaneously I have been doing a PhD on the ecological and environmental impact on monuments and their conservation and hope to develop this in the context of temple studies. The funding shortages in my institution were balanced by the timely awards received from your Trust, and my project work was also considered as part of my career development evaluation by my institution.

The award, granted when I was pursuing my research for a PhD at Banaras Hindu University, helped me with data collection from museums and sites in Madhya Pradesh and Orissa as well as west and south India. I achieved my PhD and published two articles and presented two papers in national seminars in the years immediately following that while pursuing post-doctoral research. My academic career has continued.

Sculptural Bas reliefs in Western Indian Caves (2nd Century BC to 3rd Century AD)
During 1990 Shri N M Deshpande, one of the doyens of Indian archaeology, suggetsed that as nobody had studied the sculptural bas reliefs in early Buddhist caves in Maharashtra, I should try to study them. While conducting the primary study on the area, I was transferred to Madras, and lost hope of continuing my interest with this transfer and shelved the project, but a friend suggested that I apply to the NTICVA for a grant. I did so and was very happy to receive the grant.

The topic chosen for the first award was not a usual one and I had to visit most of the places from where I had drawn reference. The fieldwork done for this award was a very exciting experience it helped me to look into many other aspects connected with t. The study has actually resulted in a source book for future reference and this is in my opinion the most satisfying part of the Study Grant.
