The excavation of a Chalcolithic site in North West Rajasthan

2005

With funding from the NTICVA between January and April 2005 I assisted with a number of archaeological projects in India. Firstly I spent one and a half months excavating at the site of Gilund, Rajasthan. The excavations at this Chalcolithic site were being conducted jointly by Vasant Shinde of the Deccan College Pune and Gregory Possehl of the University of Pennsylvania. The second part of my project consisted of three weeks studying at the Deccan College. Lastly I spent one week assisting a student from the University of Chicago with fieldwork for her PhD dissertation.

Museum studies Conservation Arms and Armour Gujarat Rajasthan

The study aided by this grant and two subsequent grants the following year has helped me to bring to reality in a practical way my dream of preparing a catalogue of arms and armour in the museums of Maharashtra, and also the cataloguing of arms in the Government of Chennai's collections. Primarily, it allowed me complete the identification of the arms collection in the Mahatma Phule Museum, Pune. The catalogue of this collection will be published shortly (2001).

This award motivated and helped me to explore the art and cultural heritage of small folk pockets of Rajasthan & UP. I was pursuing my Masters in History of Art when I got this award. The classroom studies provide us with a theoretical know how of any subject. To get involved and understand the practical significance and importance of arts and culture in rural areas one has to deeply interact with the local habitats.

The grant helped me to work on this subject - a project that I had dreamt of doing but could not take forward because of monetary problems. It helped me to come to know about a traditional method of carving which is almost dying out. It has both helped my creative work as a sculptor and given me knowledge that I can pass on to my students so that they can use it in their work. I have also discussed the procedures with colleagues who work on portraiture.

This was the first award that came my way when I was embarking on a professional career in India. I was full of hope and a vision of all I could do for art conservation in India and the award helped me take my first step in that direction without having to wait or lose steam. It reinforced my confidence in myself and in my belief that if there is a worthy idea and sincere effort then there are people to support you.

Art History Painting Early Modern Rajasthan

I received the award at the outset of my research for the doctoral thesis. The timely award enabled me to travel to museums and document the set of paintings which formed a good portion of my research material. It also facilitated the correspondence with various other museums abroad and in India, enablng me to gather information regarding their collections and most specifically the Sursagar set of Mewar that I was working on. I could also use the money of the award on processing of photographs of the paintings, copies of which I evenutally sent to the Trust as part of my project report.
